IBI Triple Silver Winners at Green Apple Awards
Three IBI Group projects have been presented silver awards at the International Green Apple Awards ceremony held at The Crystal Building, London. Launched by The Green Organization in 1994, the International Green Apple Awards are dedicated to recognizing, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. IBI was one of a select few to be presented with multiple awards at the event.
IBI’s first success was for the Blackpool and The Fylde College, Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) in the Education category. This project is a £5.5 million new build facility located at Bispham Campus. The ATC is designed to help train the next generation of engineers and give students a space that would allow their technical and professional skills to grow. The build achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ environmental design standard and includes sustainable technologies and renewable energy initiatives to help reduce the College’s energy consumption.
IBI’s second silver award was dedicated to Architectural Heritage and recognised SS Peter Paul and Philomena Church in New Brighton on the Wirral. This is a £200k renovation project and part of a wider £1million conservation initiative. The grade two listed church, dubbed ‘Dome of Home’, was originally completed in 1935 and was the first to be constructed with a concrete frame and brick cladding. The project also featured on the recent BBC2 series ‘The Hairy Builders’.
The final award was presented to the Morrison Hospital, Swansea in the Wales category. The design of the 750-bed hospital was praised for transforming the lives of both patients, families and staff and its contribution to the local community. The building’s energy efficient, BREEAM ‘Excellent’ design aims to deliver long-term cost-savings for the Trust.
Lindsay Gibbon, architect and Studio Associate Director said: The Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board was very happy to win a Green Apple award as this reflects the importance they place on sustainability and reflects the ‘Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015’. This is about improving the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales, making public bodies think more about the long term.”
The Green Apple Awards were presented by Dr. Paula Owen of the Eco Action Games, a social enterprise company dedicated to environmental education, engagement and behaviour change.
